Introduction

Tuscany, land of beauty, birthplace of timeless sculptors. Homeland of Michelangelo, Cellini, Giambologna, Donatello, Ghiberti, Verrocchio… artists who left an indelible mark on the world history of art, and who in no other part of the world could have expressed the same beauty.

Tuscany Art Retrait is the inseparable combination between Tuscany and Art: an artistic retreat in the beauty of Tuscany, a sculpture course by Fabrizio Orlandini, an immersion in nature surrounded by indescribable masterpieces, through a tradition that inspired some of the most important artworks in the world. It represents the best way to combine the passion for art and sculpture with a stay in Tuscany. We are ready, and you?

The course

Tuscany Art Retrait is a one-week sculpture course that takes place from March 31st to April 5th, 2018 inside the prestigious “Tenuta San Giovanni” in Lucca. A unique way to spend the Easter holidays in the name of art and relaxation while learning the fundamentals of sculpture. The course aims to transmit the techniques of modern sculpture, from the drawing to the creation of the three-dimensional model, up to the digitalization of the model and the realization of the sculpture with the latest generation of robotic technologies.

At the end of the course each student will be able to reproduce the model made during the lessons in composite material, with a 3D printer, or in marble, depending on his sensitivity and preference. The realization of the marble work will take place in a laboratory in Pietrasanta or Carrara, with a 7-axis robot of the latest generation.

The limited number of available places will allow a direct relationship between teacher and student. Those who already have a good knowledge of the techniques will agree with the teacher an individual improvement course.

The teacher speaks fluent English.

The excursions

During the course there will be four out-of-town excursions on four different days. Through the excursions, you could immerse yourself in the spirit of the path, share with the other participants emotions and thoughts, let yourself be enchanted by a unique context in the world.

The four excursions, that will take place in the afternoon, will allow you to visit:

  • The city of Lucca and its extraordinary beauties
  • The artistic laboratory of Fabrizio Orlandini, teacher of the course
  • The marble quarries of Carrara and a state-of-the-art robotics sculpture workshop
  • The famous Uffizi Museum in Florence

The artist

Fabrizio Orlandini is an internationally renowned sculptor and creator of jewels. He was born in Lucca in 1953. He studied sculpture first at the Passaglia School of Arts in Lucca and later at the School of Fine Arts in Florence. He teached for a short period of time at the Art Institute of Pietrasanta, getting thus in contact with the best artisan tradition in marble workshops and foundries. Following the example of the great masters of the Renaissance, he deepened various artistic disciplines (architecture, sculpture, painting and goldsmithing), developing high-level technical skills. Fabrizio Orlandini is a modern interpreter of the Italian way of understanding art: he is a real workshop man, heir to an artisan tradition that has its roots in the Renaissance.

His works can be found in several private collections in Italy and abroad, in the municipal offices of Lucca, Capannori, Carrara, Civitella Val di Chiana, in the Museo dei Bozzetti of Pietrasanta, in the modern art collection of the Hofstra University in New York, and in the Seton Hall University of New Jersey.

The estate “Tenuta San Giovanni”

Tenuta San Giovanni is located in Lucca, immersed in the countryside just outside the city, where silence and a soft sea breeze caress the thoughts. The villa contains 8 apartments, tastefully furnished and equipped with the most modern comforts. The property offers unforgettable views over the olive groves, the hills and the surrounding woods. The farmhouse, originally owned by a branch of the noble Antinori family, dates back to 1700: after a careful renovation, it has now returned to its former glory.

A few kilometers far from the estate are the cities of Pisa, Florence and Siena, some of the most wonderful ancient villages of Tuscany such as Volterra and San Gimignano, and the Versilia coast (30 km far from the estate lies Marina di Vecchiano beach, the most beautiful in this area, part of the natural park of Migliarino).
